What We Believe
While the Church of the Brethren denomination traditionally is non-creedal (without a fixed Statement of Faith), – For more information visit its official website: www.brethren.org, the Germantown Church of the Brethren has adopted these guiding beliefs:
GOD HEAD
We believe that there is One God, who chose to manifest Himself in three persons as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The Godhead is a “tri-unity” in perfect unity. (Matthew 28:16-20; Ephesians 1:3-14; Titus 3:4-7)
THE HOLY SCRIPTURES
We maintain the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Covenants) as the inspired and final authority in the Church. (2Peter1:16-21; Hebrews 4:12-13;2Timothy 3:14-17)
THE CHURCH
We hold that the Church is the body of Christ (1Corinthians 12:12-27;
Ephesians 2:11-22; Colossians 1:19-23; Colossians 3:12-15)
MARRIAGE/FAMILY VALUES
We support and promote the institution of marriage which is meant to be a lifetime, monogamous relationship between man and woman, based on unconditional love, expressed by a covenant commitment (vows) and may be sealed by a sexual union. (Genesis2:24; Matthew 19:6; Hebrews 13:4)
We emphasize family unity espoused in Ephesians 5:22-6:4 and through family worship and wholesome fun activities.
HUMAN LIFE
We believe in the sanctity of human life and strongly renounce capital punishment, abortion and violence in personal and industrial controversies and national conflicts. (2Kings 6:20-23; Romans 12:17-21; Matthew 7:12;
Romans 13:8-10)
LIFESTYLE
We affirm the scriptural teaching that we are the temple of the living God and His Spirit dwells in us and that our lifestyle and appearance should reflect His glory. (1Corinthians 3:16)
